Link Building: The Building Blocks of Your SEO Plan

Link Building
(Last Updated On: June 7, 2021)

Link building is perhaps the most critical element of an effective SEO strategy. How does one go about it though? Let’s delve deeper into a step-by-step guide on how to build quality backlinks from high domain authority sites.

There are two ways of approaching link building – a paid method and an organic method.

There are several sources you can buy links from. The difficulty with this approach is every time you want new backlinks, you need to cough up money. Also, the process of how backlinks work remains a mystery.

On the other hand, the organic method is time-consuming but more effective. You don’t have to spend any money, you just have to invest some time.

Step-By-Step Guide to Building Backlinks, Organically

Let’s get cracking on this step-by-step guide to building quality backlinks, organically.

What is a backlink?

A backlink is a hyperlink that redirects back to your website from another website. Getting a backlink from a website that has a higher domain authority gives your website more credibility and pushes up your domain authority.

Lost Links Strategy

Let’s discuss something I call the Lost Links Strategy. This is a spin-off of the Broken Link Strategy as proposed by Neil Patel.

  • Find out lost links of your competitors

The first step is to find out all the lost backlinks of your competitors. You could do that with an SEO software. My personal favorite is AHREFs. It has an easy and intuitive navigation dashboard.

Below is a dashboard which has been pulled for one of the many sites I manage. The link on top left with blue sign – you will find all the links lost in for a particular time period for your competitor.

This is the screen you will see once you click on “lost links”. Select the date range and links will appear.

There are many filters to prune your data in a more meaningful manner like Link Type. You could choose to select only the Do-Follow Link Type.

  • Build Content similar to competitor’s pages on which links are lost

Now that you have data about the lost links. Here are the things you now know about the links you are targeting:

  • From which site the link was lost
  • What was the domain ranking
  • What was the linked page
  • What anchor was used
  • What kind of link it was – Do-Follow or No-Follow
  • When was the link lost

Armed with this data, what can we do?

You check whether you have similar content as is present on the linked page of your competitor. If yes, then great! And if No, then you build better content than the competitor.

  • Reach Out to Websites from lost links

Once you have built relevant content and are confident that it is better than your competitor, it is time to reach out to the site administrator from where the link was lost.

Here is an email template you could use. It has been taken from AHREFs.

[Name],

I was doing some research on [topic] and came across your resource at [URL].

There is good information here, but I noticed your link to [site] returns an error (maybe the site is down, or the post has been removed). I’ve previously written a similar article to the one that’s missing.

If you’d like, check it out and see if it makes sense to replace the broken link:

Either way, thanks for creating and sharing a great resource on [topic].

[Your Salutation]

Follow up with the websites you are targeting and that’s it!

Do these 3 steps, sit back and earn loads of high-quality backlinks from high DA sites. We have been using this strategy for the last couple of months now and are seeing great results.
