And that, it also directly causes an economic loss of close to $152 billion globally?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian government has taken note of the gravity of the problem and has decided to develop a framework that helps curb fake reviews on eCommerce platforms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is the government concerned and what are steps you can take as a small eCommerce business owner? Let us tell you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the Indian government&#8217;s concerns about fake reviews?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representatives from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Advertising Standards Council of India,\u00a0 eCommerce companies, consumer forums, law universities, FICCI, CII and other consumer rights activists held a meeting where they discussed the negative impact of fake reviews on online businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Their main concerns are:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Negative reviews after unrealistic expectations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unverifiable reviews\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not disclosing incentivised reviews\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Tracing the origins of the reviews<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post the meeting, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public distribution released a statement where they promised to develop a legal framework to curb paid and unverified reviews. The statement stated &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA), after studying the present mechanism being followed by eCommerce entities in India and best practices available globally, will develop these frameworks.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related read:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/build-customer-trust-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to build customer\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b trust online: 8 solid ways<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How do fake reviews affect eCommerce businesses?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 2015, the European parliament released a document which defined fake reviews as<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAny review that is not an actual consumer\u2019s honest and impartial opinion, or that does not reflect a consumer\u2019s genuine experience of a product, service or business.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In the era of eCommerce, consumers do not have the luxury of touching and feeling each product before they buy it from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/online-store\/?utm_source=imblog&amp;utm_medium=interlink&amp;utm_campaign=online_store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online store<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of consumers purchase after checking reviews. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A survey by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bazaarvoice.com\/resources\/consumers-call-for-action-on-fake-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bazaarvoice<\/a> showed that <strong>26% of respondents<\/strong> admitted fake reviews would lead them to lose trust in the eCommerce brand.
