It\u2019s one of the payment options that allow you to pay anyone &#8211; online stores, your friends &amp; families, shopkeepers, restaurants and more) in an easier &amp; faster way.<\/p>\n<p>The most used UPI apps available today are BHIM, Google Pay (Tez), PhonePe, Paytm, WhatsApp Payments with some other bank UPI apps.<\/p>\n<h2>What People Don\u2019t Know or Hardly Know About UPI<\/h2>\n<p>Let me take you through some lesser-known facts about UPI.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UPI app should be installed on their mobile when paying by UPI on an online store.<\/li>\n<li>Users can instantly transfer money through mobile device round the clock 24*7 and 365 days.<\/li>\n<li>UPI can be found in any form &#8211; QR+barcode (Scan and Pay) based payments, Utility Bill Payments, Over the Counter Payments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Difference between UPI ID &amp; VPA (Virtual Payment Address)<\/h3>\n<p>You can create your VPA according to your choice in some UPI apps, it\u2019s not by default. (only a few apps like Google Pay (Tez) doesn\u2019t give this option. (These screens are from Freshmenu &amp; Tez(Now Google Pay) iOS app)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Apps like \u2014 Google Pay (Tez), BHIM, PhonePe and Paytm are all UPI apps which use a VPA(Virtual Payment Address)\/UPI ID to make &amp; receive payments.<\/p>\n<h3>Adding UPI options to your Website or App<\/h3>\n<p>You can allow your customers to pay you with UPI too. But how do you enable UPI payment option for your website or app in a way that your users understand UPI too?<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, while adding the UPI payment option to Instamojo web\/app, I dug deeper into these questions <strong>\u201cWhat People Don\u2019t Know or Hardly Know About the UPI\u201d<\/strong> and I found some great ways to add UPI options.<\/p>\n<p>Below are screenshots from our UPI payment options to explain my findings better.<\/p>\n<h3>Things to keep in mind:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1. Try avoiding input fields with a placeholder like this example shown below:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8308 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UPI3.png\" alt=\"UPI\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UPI3.png 600w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UPI3-300x100.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\nIndia has a big user base, and they all are not the same. They all are from different backgrounds and cities. Some users may take more to understand a new service or technology than a person from a big city.<\/p>\n<p>In the example above, it is difficult to understand what the user must do.\u00a0 We found a lot of users entering the same VPA in the input field while paying through Instamojo!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are the users typing the same VPA as in input?<\/strong><br \/>\nBecause they still don\u2019t know what\u2019s their own VPA\/UPI ID and we should tell them about this clearly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Help users to know their VPA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Presenting adaptive help to users can make it faster to find answers relevant to the user and drives them to exactly what they are looking for.<br \/>\nWe can show to the users how to find their VPA on the payment screen near the UPI input field so they can check it quickly and make the payment.<\/p>\n<p>Not just how to find UPI ID, we can also help users with how to pay using UPI(see below image).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8309 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UPI4.png\" alt=\"UPI\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UPI4.png 600w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UPI4-300x100.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This solves two problems: How to find a UPI ID and how to pay using UPI. This will:<br \/>\na.) Help users find, create or recall a VPA.<br \/>\nb.) Increase the chances of a customer paying with UPI.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Give them options to choose<\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t just provide an input field to users for entering their UPI\/VPA, give them options to choose quickly which UPI app they are using. See the example below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8310 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi5.png\" alt=\"Instamojo online payments\" width=\"600\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi5.png 600w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi5-300x174.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Why give them options?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It will help users recognize UPI apps and which of them they already have installed on their phones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is Instamojo showing these 4 options only?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Instamojo also allows a customer to choose other UPI apps as well, we feature 4 main options.<\/p>\n<p>According to our data, customers were using these top 4 UPI apps most of the time to pay with UPI on Instamojo. It\u2019s totally up to you to decide which options you want to show.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Data leads to insights; business owners, managers or designers can turn those insights into decisions and actions that improve the experience and business. This is the power of data.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>4. Ask for less<\/h3>\n<p>For this step, first, let me explain the UPI field in detail:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8311 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi6.png\" alt=\"Instamojo setup of payments\" width=\"800\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi6.png 800w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi6-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi6-768x341.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPI ID\/VPA Break Down<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the above image, the UPI ID is \u201cmurarijha@okhdfcbank\u201d<br \/>\nlet\u2019s separate this into two sections:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cmurarijha\u201d is user\u2019s unique id and \u201c@okhdfcbank\u201d this the PSP(payment service provider). A VPA is a combination of the Unique ID &amp; PSP. You can just show the PSP (payment service provider) by default according to chosen the UPI app.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8316 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi7.png\" alt=\"UPI Payments Instamojo\" width=\"800\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi7.png 800w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi7-300x143.png 300w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi7-768x365.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The PSP (Payment service provider) is different for each bank, same as the UPI apps. Every app has tie-ups with different banks for UPI payment option.<\/p>\n<h3>Understanding PSPs and UPI Payments<\/h3>\n<p>So if you are using a bank\u2019s UPI app (ex. SBI Pay from SBI bank, then the PSP would be \u201c@sbi\u201d).\u00a0 In another case, if you choose a UPI app eg. PhonePe then the PSP would be \u201c@ybl\u201d, ybl stands for Yes Bank Limited and PhonePe has a tie-up with yes bank. See how UPI apps are using different PSP in their apps in the image below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8315 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi8.png\" alt=\"UPI Payments\" width=\"800\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi8.png 800w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi8-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi8-768x541.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPI Apps and their UPI IDs\/VPAs examples<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Only Google Pay (Tez) has multiple PSP(Payment Service Provider). If a user is choosing Google Tez as their UPI app then we can show a drop-down near the PSP handle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8314 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi9.png\" alt=\"UPI Payments\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi9.png 600w, https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/upi9-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a great way to ask for as less information and yet provide them options to choose from. They just need to enter their unique id because the PSP is already visible according to their chosen UPI app.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Please don\u2019t forget to provide these options \u201cHow to Find UPI ID\u201d &amp; \u201cHow to Pay by UPI\u201d near the input field \u201cEnter your UPI ID\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To reiterate, educate and allow your customers to choose. The above steps and suggestions made our user experience a lot easier. If you already have a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instamojo.com\/blog\/5-things-can-upi-vpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Virtual Payment Address(VPA)<\/span><\/a><\/strong> you can use it to pay on Instamojo.
